Dolby TrueHD: Dolby TrueHD represents bit-for-bit identical reproduction of the studio master in your own home, bringing you truly magnificent sound quality. Dolby TrueHD soundtracks are found in 5.1 or 7.1 channels at sample rates of up to 192kHz.
Dolby Digital Plus: Dolby Digital Plus builds upon the proven technology used with Dolby Digital. Higher bit rates and backwards compatibility with the older Dolby Digital format provides improved dynamics and frequency response whilst retaining efficient use of disc space.
DTS-HD Master Audio: This new lossless high definition format from DTS has helped re-define home cinema sound. Up to eight discrete channels of uncompressed audio (192kHz/24-bit) give you truly superb, studio quality reproduction.
DTS-High Resolution Audio: DTS-High Resolution Audio can be found where efficient use of disc space is required without compromising audio fidelity. This is essentially an extension of the legacy DTS format but with higher bit-rates which deliver greater dynamics and frequency response.
VRS by Anchor Bay Technologies: Anchor Bay Technologies have a fine reputation as a manufacturer of high-end video processing semiconductors. Yamaha's upscaling receivers implement ABT chips, equipped with the latest Video Reference Series processing. Precision video scaling, and precision deinterlacing focus on delivering outstanding picture quality from high definition and standard definition sources. http://www.anchorbaytech.com/vrs_technology/
YPAO: Yamaha's Parametric Acoustic Optimiser (YPAO) system enables convenient, accurate and trouble-free calibration of your listening environment. In one simple process, the included calibration microphone monitors a variety of test signals produced by the receiver, and adjusts a number of parameters (such as frequency response, speaker delay and channel level) to optimise the audio performance of your home theatre system.
Made for iPod: Compatible Yamaha receivers allow you to simply drop your iPod into the Yamaha iPod dock and navigate through your entire music library using the receiver's remote control. You can even view photos and movies on your TV screen!*
* iPod Classic, iPod Touch and the latest iPod nano require the Yamaha YDS-11 to access visual content.
Network Receiver: Yamaha network receivers allow you to access music libraries stored on other computers on your home network…no more listening to your MP3 collection through those tinny computer speakers! You can also stream music, news or foreign language programs via internet radio from any corner of the globe.
6ch/8ch External Input: Whatever technological advances take place, a discrete 6 or 8ch external input will allow you to be ready for the next generation of multi-channel audio. By allowing direct access to each of the receiver's power amplifiers, the external device can feed analogue multi-channel audio directly to your speakers. In this case, all of the digital processing and decoding is done by the external device (such as a Blu-Ray player) - useful if your receiver is not equipped with the appropriate decoding circuitry.
HiFi and Cinema DSP: Yamaha invented Digital Soundfield Processing (DSP) in the 1980's to enable the immersive surround experience that the movie and music producers intended in your own home. Even with the advent of discrete 5.1 and 7.1 channel surround, Yamaha continues to be at the cutting edge of this technology. Yamaha's engineers have made acoustic measurements of several renowned venues to re-create their individual sonic signature in your home. By selecting any one of the many hi-fi or Cinema DSP modes available, you can instantly transform your lounge room into one of the world's most famous listening environments!
3D Cinema DSP: After inventing DSP in the 1980's, Yamaha has once again advanced and re-defined this often mimicked technology. Conventional surround systems (like 5.1 or 7.1) place each of the speakers roughly at ear level, which restricts the perception of height due to the two-dimensional layout of the speakers. Activating the 3D DSP mode adds the third dimension - height. The heightened sound stage provides a more encompassing audio experience.
Compressed Music Enhancer: While it's convenient to reduce the file size of songs to facilitate large music libraries on small devices, audio fidelity can be lost to the ravages of digital compression. Yamaha's Compressed Music Enhancer uses sophisticated processing and exclusive, patented algorithms to breathe life back into your collection. The Compressed Music Enhancer restores the upper harmonics from the available data and bass frequencies regain their original smoothness, depth and impact.
Digital ToP-ART: Digital Total Purity Audio Reproduction Technology (ToP-ART) is a design methodology that embodies Yamaha's corporate culture of Natural Sound.
Design Philosophy Of Digital ToP-ART
- Only the finest audio-grade components are used. By implementing the correct design characteristics, the highest level of audio reproduction is built into Yamaha's ToP-ART equipped amplifiers.
- Individual component placement is carefully considered as the audio path is painstakingly tuned by Yamaha's team of engineers, whose design philosophy is equally informed by engineering finesse and musical aesthetic.
- The selection of power supply components, heat sink, chassis and circuit board layout is considered crucial to prevent cross-talk, interference and resonance between the many different sections of the AV receiver.
- HDMI and video sections are chosen for their low-noise characteristics to prevent any degradation of the overall audio performance.
Silent Cinema: Silent Cinema mode gives you private listening enjoyment of multi-channel movies or music through regular headphones. Strategic phasing and delay algorithms are employed to trigger the ear's natural ability to pick the direction of a sound's origin. As such, the surround, centre and front channels are individually perceived as discrete sources through ordinary stereo headphones.
Advanced YST: Yamaha's patented Advanced Active Servo Technology (Advanced YST) generates incredible bass from small speaker enclosures. Advanced YST is the ideal method of combining amplifiers and speakers for maximum performance. Advanced YST works by controlling the actual movements and resonances of the speaker/cabinet combination by using a process of 'negative impedance', thereby precisely determining the subwoofer's frequency response.
QD Bass Technology: Yamaha's unique QD-Bass (Quatre Dispersion Bass) technology uses down-firing drivers with square, pyramid-shaped reflective plates to radiate the sound efficiently in four horizontal directions. The reflective plates negate any effects caused by the floor surface and reduce resonance between sound waves reflected from the floor and the unit. By radiating the sound waves in four directions to avoid the legs of the cabinet, QD-Bass reduces turbulence caused by reflection from the legs. The QD-Bass system provides extraordinary power and smooth frequency response from an extremely compact unit. It also allows greater freedom of placement, since the sound radiates with equal effectiveness in all directions.
PlayXchange: The most obvious benefit of Yamaha's PlayXchange CD players is that it allows you to change up to four discs at a time, whilst leaving a fifth disc playing in the unit…but this is just one part of this unique design. Unlike other manufacturer's carousel players, Yamaha's disc clamping system behaves more like a single disc player with the excellent mechanical isolation benefits that this provides.
